Spam Volumes Drop by Two-Thirds After Firm Goes Offline

The volume of junk e-mail sent worldwide plummeted this week after a Web hosting firm identified by the computer security community as a major host of organizations engaged in spam activity was taken offline.

Earlier this week, Internet providers McColo Corp., a hosting provider in Northern California, USA, was taken offline. This ISP was was the home for machines responsible for coordinating the sending of roughly 75% of all worldwide spam each day.

eTailor statistics today show our spam filters have seen a dramatic fall-off in levels of spam since the hardware was taken offline.

The world of spam is no place for complacency however – its only a matter of time before another rogue ISP fills the void. The best defence is to ensure your email provider has solid anti-spam measures in place.
