SME retailers embrace online commerce

The proportion of SME retailers in the UK who operate e-commerce websites has grown from 11 percent to 35 percent since 2006, according to a new survey.

More than one-third of 277 SME retailers questioned by e-commerce vendor Actinic now have an online store, and of those that do not, 22 percent say they have definite plans to launch one. One in 10 respondents now sell via a major online marketplace such as eBay or Amazon, and 66 percent say their site is profitable. Significantly, one-quarter say they have lost money as a result of online fraud.
