According to a recent survey by McAfee, over one third of websites registered with the “.cm” domain extension pose a security threat to web surfers. “.cm” is the domain extension for the West African country, Cameroon, and is used by fraudsters to take advantage of the similarilty with the “.com” extension. By setting up “.cm” websites that pose as the legitimage “.com” sites, they can infect users’ computers with spyware, malware and adware. Early last year the “.tk” domain was considered the world’s riskiest domain. Their rank has since dropped to #19. In that same time, we reported “.ie” as being the 2nd safest domain in the world, after Japan. It has kept that ranking, and is still the safest domain to register in Europe.
To ensure your online brand is protected, make sure to register both the .ie and .com versions of your domain, and a .co.uk domain if you plan to do business in the UK.
