Over a third of SME’s in the UK neglect their search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy, according to a survey by Fasthosts web firm.
Despite the number of firms not submiting their websites to search engines having fallen from 49 percent during 2006 to just 17 percent in 2009, many businesses still do not understand how search results are compiled. Just 19 percent of respondents believe that they cannot influence the order of the search results, while 12 percent think the results reflect how much has been paid by the businesses being listed.
Both of these assumptions are incorrect. It is positive that more firms are submitting their websites to search engines, however they should also more deeply consider the benefits. Businesses need to understand this crucial selling opportunity, it should be clearer that with a little time and effort, SEO can pay back almost instantly.
