The Data Protection Commissioner has issued a warning about fake ‘cold calls’ scam in Ireland.
A prosecution is likely in a “cold call” phone scam that has been operating here.
According to reports today, the Data Protection Commissioner has identified links in Ireland to a company based abroad that are “cold-calling” people, pretending they are from Microsoft.
Those behind the scam tell their victims that there is a problem with their computer and offer to help to solve it.
But those who take up the offer are asked to download a file to “fix” the problem and end up having their personal information stolen.
Microsoft Ireland is advising customers to treat all unsolicited calls with “scepticism” and not to provide any personal details.
