On July 31st 2009, Mozilla announced they had reached 1 billion downloads of the web browser Firefox. The open source browser first appeared on the scene in November 2004, as the open source and secure alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
At the time, Internet Explorer held a dominating 90% market share. Just one year later, Firefox had attained 10% of the browser market share. Further growth was to be seen from the open source competitor, with an impressive 30% market share from mid 2008 onwards.
Firefox achieved over 8 million downloads last year when they set out to create a Guinness world record for “largest number of software downloads in 24 hours.”
